Biographical or Historical Information

W.E. Carroon (1867 – 1960) and his brother Frank Carroon (1871 – 1941) attended Indiana State Normal School intermittently between the years 1888 and 1894. Both were already licensed schoolteachers when they decided to attend the Normal School in Terre Haute. In order to afford the tuition one brother would teach school for a year while the other attended Normal and then the other would teach while his brother attended. In this way, although it took them longer than usual to complete the course of study they were able to graduate in six years. In 1951 Will, as he was known in the family, made a tape recording of his experiences as an educator in Indiana and later in New Mexico. The section on Indiana State is abstracted from that tape. (document is in the archives) Will Carroon taught in Earl Park, Oaktown, Veedersburg and Crawfordsville, Indiana. He then moved to Neponset, Illinois. He was offered the position of principal of the Roswell High School in Roswell, New Mexico succeeding his brother, Frank. He later served as Superintendent of Schools in Clovis, New Mexico and in Santa Fe when he retired from teaching and worked in the Treasurer’s Office of the State of New Mexico until his retirement. Frank Carroon taught at Columbus, Indiana until 1904 when he became principal of the Roswell High School. In 1909 he became professor of psychology and education at the New Mexico Normal School in Las Vegas (now the New Mexico and Highlands University) and Dean of Education. From 1923 to 1932 he served as President of the University. After retiring as president he continued to serve as a member of the faculty until his death in 1941. The Rev. Canon Robert G. Carroon is the great grand nephew of Will and Frank Carroon. He graduated from Indiana State in 1960. He is the Archivist and Historiographer of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut.
